> Is there a similar version that will run on my 386DX40?

For what it's worth, one of our terminal servers is a 386DX25 running
dynamic PPP service on two dozen dialups and two dozen other dedicated
ports. It's running the standard Slackware installation circa this
time last year, with a 1.2.8 kernel built to handle lots of ppp
devices.
