Annoying POP message

I am using POP 3 To get my mail from my service provider. When I
reinstalled Linux on my system recently, an annoying blank message is
included in the /var/spool/mail file. It contains nothing but a reference
to POP3 and no text or subject. Note that this occurs for every message,
not a group of messages.

I have gone over the docs repeatedly but dispite any option I use, this
message still gets written.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
