Booting X-Windows

Oh don't be- you can do almost everything from the command line anyway ...

One good X troubleshooting method that I have often used is to start up
emacs, run M-x shell to get the unix prompt, then try to startx. This way,
all the stuff that X tells you about why it's working [or not] is saved in
an emacs buffer that you can review and hopefully solve the problem.
