upgrade to RedHat 5.2

Purveyors of wisdom,  I need your help:

I came to work today and found that I needed to upgrade one of my systems
to Redhat 5.2 in order to deal with its latest problems.  When the upgrade
was completed,  the system had two unfortunate symptoms in Xwindows mode.

The mouse drifts to the top of the screen and there is a message from
XBanner:

Your text is probably too wide.

I have no problems with the text width,  but can't use Xwindows at all
until I can get the mouse to do something other than drift to the top of
my screen.  

Thanks for any suggestions.
