couple questions about free apps

That depends on what you mean by free, and what you mean by office.  If
you are referring to Microsoft Office compatible, and if by free you mean
free as in beer and not as in speach, the Star Office suite is what you're
looking for. See http://www.stardivision.com/  

Star Office is free for personal use only.

If you're looking for free as in speach, then you're probably looking for
Koffice from the kde project or Gnome Workshop from the Gnome Project

Go to tucows.com and download MiX.  It's not great but it works.  Look for
it in the Servers section of the Windows section.
