You are absolutely right.  "make mrproper" removes it before you compile a
kernel, at which point it is then added at compile time.  My confusion
arose from doing a make mrproper and a make clean after I was done
compiling to clean up the src direcotry, and should have just used a make
clean.  Please forgive.
