PPP connection is dropping too frequently

The last few days I have noticed some strange behavior from out dial up
connection. It sometimes hold an open connection for a few (4-8) hours
(which is normal) but more frequently (especially lately) it is dropping
the connection after just a few minutes. I have noticed this strange
behavior with more than one ISP. We have tried both Netcom and TIAC,
both with the same results.
I have checked the cabels, the phone line and even went so far as to
uninstall and reinstall ppp! Still I am getting this bad behavior.
I am using a RH6 system with an old external Cardinal 28.8/33.6 modem.

I'm really just looking for suggestions where I could look, or what to
try.

Thanks,
Phil Buckely
