I haven't tried Mandrake myself; I started on Slackware in '94, and in '95
I tried the first pre-release of Caldera. That was based on Redhat, and
I've been using Redhat ever since. I haven't really had the time to try
out the other distributions.

Slackware was pretty much a do-it-yourself distribution; no package
management, no dependency tracking. I don't know its present state, but it
may fit your definition of "hacker-oriented". Debian is another one that
I've heard is focused on the technically inclined.

Our meetings are open to everyone; you're welcome to attend.
