sanity check for disk images

Hello,

I need to make sure that i have this correct. This is the
first time that i've heard of these two program (cksum and
md5sum). I'm guess that they both do the same thing but with
different methods. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

My second question is what does the out put mean. I know what
the out put of cksum means, i was able to find that on the web.
But what about md5sum? What does the string of characters mean
that is printed, the strings should the same right? For cksum
the first number, the check sum, what significants does that
have?

Please pardon all these questions, i can't find documentation
of this anywhere.

Thanks,
