I figured I might as well install the rhsound noarch.rpm from RH6.0,
only to find that it required the aumix rpm.  Upon installing the RH6.2
rpm of aumix, I found that it had outdated rhsound and put the necessary
restoration steps in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit.  I'd be disappointed if RH
had relied on a desktop/window manager's settings to restore sound
levels, as most light-weight managers include no such setup, and would
seem quite foolish (go WindowMaker!).  Thanks for everyone's help.
