second X server?

I'm trying to get a second X server to come up on my computer on the
'F8' console.
I've tried
X :1
and
xinit -- /usr/X11R6/bin/X :1

But all either did was hardlock X, my mouse, and my keyboard.

Reading the man page for xinit it seemed like that should work, but it
didn't

So what am I doing wrong?
