Another suggestion is to use one of the low cost cable/DSL routers. These connect to your DSL router and provide dynamic non-routable IPs to your local machines as well as DNS. (Although I was unable to get it to provide DNS for the linux machines). These boxes cost about $150-$200 US, which might be a bit high for people on a tight budget.
