Boot Problem

Hi all,

I would like my hard disk to boot up using the linux bootsector (don't want to use LILO).
May I know how do I do that? Which image should I use? bvmlinux.out, bzImage, zImage or vmlinux.out?
What are the differences? I tried connecting the hard disk as a slave and run (the following) and then transfer the hard disk to another system setting it to master

dd if=bzImage of=/dev/hdb bs=446 count=1 but it doesn't boot
and dd if=bvmlinux.out of=/dev/hdb bs=446 count=1 doesn't work too.

What did I do wrong?
