Problems with Star Office

This morning I have a wierd problem with Star Office on my laptop (SuSE
7.1, K:2.2.18, Soffice 5.2).

The spash screen comes up, but not the desktop. It's been working fine.
I use it for the classes I teach at Northeastern.

The one complicating factor is that I export 2 subdirectories of office52 so
I can run Star Office on my desktop and update the files on the laptop,
but that should not affect the star office desktop.

I should be able to reinstall without losing any files, but I'm looking for
suggestions.
I did check and clear the lock file. I checked ownership and permissions
of all files in my home directory.

The one thing I did on that system was to install a java vm when running
Netscape. I am researching this.
