external monitor from a laptop

I wish I still had the laptop. All I remember now is that I plugged it
in
and it seemed to work for all the various combinations I tried. And I
tried
just about everything. I was using a Dell CPx laptop and Viewsonic 17"
monitor. Both could handle pretty good resolution.

I guess it is possible I didn't try different resolutions, but I can't
seeing
me letting things well enough along just because it worked one way ;)

I'm curious how you set up your laptop to display on both the LCD and
the external monitor at different resolutions.
