Samba, SMBFS and Tar

I back up my wife's Windows system to my system every night. Recently I
have been seeing messages such as:
tar: ./WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/DRIVERS/GM.DLS: file changed as we read it

I have verified that this file has not been changed in years. I also
compared it with the same file on another Windows system and cmp did not
show any differences. I am using SuSE 7.1 with a 2.4.2.
Samba version 2.0.10
tar (GNU tar) 1.13.18
