Do I need portmap? also Q on identd

If I don't know of any rpc stuff I'm doing, do I need portmap?

Also, identd (which I think I need to do irc) seems to be running one
master and three slaves. /etc/identd.conf does not appear to have an
option to control the number of copies running. How do I do that? And
will irc still work if I have it return uid instead of name?

Thanks.
