Simple text markup?

What to use to generate various fonts,
font sizes, horizontal rules, etc. for
fairly simple invoices?

Years ago I would simply insert the printer's
escape sequences as needed. Today I could
do this for the laserjets in use but I haven't
figured out CUPS and a Brother HL-1670 that
might be used. Anyway this doesn't seem
like a reasonable solution anymore.
