Please help with terminal settings

Thanks for reading this. My brain is running a little slow today, and
so I'd appreciate some help on a simple problem.

How do I "lock" the text login console to double-bright mode? I only use
a basic 80x25 screen, and it's always too dim to see unless I draw the
shades.

Of course, I can change the monitor's settings, but that's not practical
since I use the monitor for other boxes as well.

I've been wading through the termcap and terminfo help pages with no
luck. Setterm -bold only works until the next command executes.

Thanks for your help.
