Journaling file systems revisited

My personal experiences with tapes:
In a bank where 9 track tapes were stored on site in an environmentally
controlled library and offsite (accross the parking lot). I went to restore
from a backup, and failed 3 or 4 generations.
However, I did work for a company that had to go back 5 years and restate
their fixed asset depreciation. Apparently some of the tapes were bad.
At home, I restored from some tape backups, and the tape drive destroyed my
tapes (fortunately, I had a Jaz drive backup that worked.).,
