debian and xfree86

I recently installed debian on one of my computers. I
did not install xfree86 on it at all. I then issued
the following command 'apt-get install gnome gdm2'. I
got no errors. But now when I do startx i get the
following error:

/usr/X11R6/lib/Xll/xinit/xserverrc: /usr/bin/X11/X: No
such file or directory
xinit: Connection refused (errno 111) unable to
connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error

Would someone be able to point me in the right
direction to get gnome to work?
