new gaim user



Well, there's the IRC functionality of Gaim (I prefer X-Chat myself).  I'm
a regular on #FreeBSD, #Mandrake, and #Mdk-Cooker on irc.freenode.net, but
there's rooms for just about anything, and it's a relatively mature crowd.
 I'm not sure if that's what you were looking for.
