IEEE 1394 PCI Cards for Linux

Hello:

My motherboard has a place for a firewire connection, but the $20
w/rebate special at Micro Center didn't solder in those connections.
My system is Linux amd 2.6.7-1-k7. I do have 2.4 kernels and could
compile necessary components in.

Is there anything to watch out for in buying a firewire/pci card?
What are people's experiences with these types of connections/kernels?

Thanks, its off to Micro Center I go...
