how do you store a bunch of files?

Compress it, burn it to a CD twice, put one in a fireproof box
in my bedroom along with other important docs, put the other in 
a locked fireproof box somewhere else.

Encryption is for people who have serious secrets. For mere
privacy, you can generally rely on a lock.
