linux filesystem limitations

Hello,
I just installed spamassassin/postfix/amavisd and all was great, in fact I had stopped 90% of our mail as spam! I can't tell you what a burden this takes off the SAN and the exchange servers. Ran into a problem though. All of the sudden at 11am mail stopped flowing. the only information I can produce is this:

Jan 11 12:50:14 uce amavis[1522]: (01522-01) TROUBLE in process_request: Can't create directory /var/amavis/tmp/amavis-20050111T125014-01522: Too many links at(eval 36) line 95, <GEN3> line 2.

There were 32000 directories inside /var/amavis/tmp (nice round number...)

(p.s. rm has a 128k argument buffer, so I had to run this command---
 find . -name '*' rm -RF
)

Anybody know off hand why the limits on /var/amavis/tmp ?
