Gentoo boot issue, possibly framebuffer?

I have a 2.6.11-r11 kernel, which is compiled with genkernel and I use the
following arguments in grub.conf: video=vesafb:1024x768-16 at 85

genkernel did some patching to the kernel config, but I'm not sure it had to
do with the vesafb framebuffer. I believe it was for the bootsplash support,
but I don't use that any longer.
