Energy-hogging Linux, what to do?

I would agree here, but laptops are not designed for 24x7 operation
(and many desktops aren't either).

One little tidbit I learned in Houston is that the Itanium chips have a
lower power draw than the x86-64 chips. The issue here is that servers
are being made thinner and packed at a higher density into single
racks. (Note that my information came from a presentation and I have
not seen the technical details). Today though, the AMD 64 series is
probably the best chip to use for processing speed unless you are doing
very heavy math processing where today's Itanium 2 wins. Intel's EM64T
series will probably continue to lag the AMD chips for several months,
