break-in attempts on my server



In addition to the other excellent advice handed out here, you can check
out the denyhosts utility.  http://denyhosts.sf.net/

It's a python script that watches your log files for such attempts and
then sticks their IP address in /etc/hosts.deny for an appropriate
amount of time.

It's really quite configurable.
