I recently changed my Verizon phone service from some unlimited
metropolitan service to completely metered. (I had chosen the
unlimited service back when dial-up was still the big thing--it is so
nice to not hear the scream of modems anymore.) Still not free phone
service, but saves a lot of money, and we have the reassurance of an
old fashioned wired dialtone

I hope you can get naked DSL. It is fun and educational to be able to
put things on a static IP.
