i18n and SCIM

I have tried to follow the various links and I am trying
to get SCIM (Smart Common Input Method) to work.
In particular, I am trying to input Japanese characters
by a method somewhat more convenient than a unicode look-up
table (though I do appreciate that URL reference).

If I interpret the SCIM setup correctly, I can trigger SCIM
by hitting "Control+space".
Well, nothing happens.
Any suggestions on how I can go about debugging my problem?

Thanks
