still running gentoo on that machine? gentoo does all it's compiling  
in /var/tmp/portage and reiserfs speeds things up a lot.

though i recently found out about ext3's dir_index option which tells  
it to "Use hashed b-trees to speed up lookups in large directories."  
supposedly it brings reiserfs advantage when dealing with small files  
to ext3 filesystems.
