I've got gcc 4, but I need gcc 3...

You don't have to pay for VMWare. The VMWare Player is free (but not
Free), and there's guidance online for configuring and installing your own
VMWare disk images without having to use VMWare Workstation. Interestingly
enough, you can use QEMU to create the initial empty VMWare disk image
on which to do an install.

FYI, I'm using VMWare player, with a Windows XP guest installation, very
successfully under Gentoo.
