Remap dump terminal keys

Hi, I'm using a Data General D460 dumb terminal as a serial console
for an embedded linux box. It works fine, mostly, but the keyboard
doesn't have a backspace or 'alt' key, which makes hotkeys a bit hard
to use. Is there a way to remap some of the dumb terminal keys to
make this thing a bit more functional? I assume this would be done in
software on the console config, but I'm not sure how it would be done.
