Escaping spaces in arguments to shell script

OK, I'm wrong .. not Unix kernel enforced, never was.

(It was only that MS "OS" that wouldn't do it, and then suddenly
started doing it by default.)

Sensible applications and sensible people didn't do it because it
would break their shellscripts. Now that I think back ... yes, I did
have to warn people that didn't worry about whose shellscripts would
back up or find or otherwise process their files or whatever that
spaces and shell meta chars in file names could cause problems back in
'82 too.
