Oracle respins Red Hat (sort of)...

Cobalt servers from Cobalt Networks was a great product, until Sun
bought them and killed the product. They made it really easy to
implement linux in small offices. I used quite a few of their servers
when I consulted. I know at least one place is still using a Cobalt
Qube to this day and it works great for their firewall, mail server and
intranet. And it cost a lot less than paying the M$ tax.

Thoughts of profits, presumably.

No. Note that Oracle is not selling the key value proposition of
Red Hat -- which is to say, a supported distribution -- but rather
hand-holding support that must either:

- escalate to Red Hat
or
- fork RH.

Sun had a lot of good ideas with Cobalt. If they had continued
it as an integral part of their offering, I think they would
have eventually made a lot of money. Instead they saw it as a
threat that they could buy and kill.
