There's a more secure, though not necessarily faster,
filesystem: sshfs, running under FUSE. It's now available for
Mac OSX, after having been Linux and FreeBSD only for a while.

As you may guess, it uses SSH to handle the network layer.

Someone has already given my best guess as to what's wrong with
your current system.
