mplayer path to codecs

hi all. i'm fiddling around with different media players on fedora. i
want to tell mplayer (installed via rpm) i have codecs in
/usr/local/lib/codecs. i assume this would go in ~/.mplayer/config.
what's the proper way to write the path to the codecs? i've searched
around but no luck, which probably means i'm not asking the question
properly. tia. - eric c.
