I haven't tried Debian yet but with Ubuntu Edgy the above works.  It is
necessary to enable MySql in PHP by editing php.ini

sudo vi /etc/php5/apache2$ php.ini

find and enable the following lines by removing the ' ; ' in the front of
each line
extension=mysql.so
extension=gd.so
