I use this site as a reference when selecting quiet CPU coolers:

http://www.silentpcreview.com/

Though their heatsink comparison chart:
http://www.silentpcreview.com/article30-page1.html

is out of date (last updated August 2006).

On my last system build I went with a Thermalright XP-90:

paired up with a 92mm Nexus Silent Fan, and an adapter for Socket 775
(Intel). It's more compact than and less expensive than comparably
performing Zalman coolers.
