Fiesty and Palm

 I decided to load a pdf on my Palm Tungsten to take with me the local
laudry. That was 7 hours ago. I have yet to embark. I was not able
to upload files to the Palm using jpilot or pilot-xfer. I receive the
message
Unable to open file.
The fill has the permissions set. It seems like I don't have
permission to access the USB ports.
Pilot-links README.usb states:
   2. Create a file in /etc/udev/rules.d called pilot.rules, with the
following information in it
                   (all on one line, and do not make a typo or it will
 not work properly):
                       BUS=="usb", SYSFS{product}=="Palm
Handheld*|Handspring *", KERNEL==
"ttyUSB*", NAME="ttyUSB%n", SYMLINK="pilot", GROUP="usb", MODE="0666"

I tried by it doesn't work. This seems to be outdated advice . The
reason that I think that it is outdated is from looking at the usb
device listings when I hit the hot sync button

$:/dev$ ls -la usb*

crw-rw-r-- 1 root dialout 254, 11 2007-07-01 13:11 usbdev1.5_ep00
crw-rw-r-- 1 root dialout 254, 13 2007-07-01 13:11 usbdev1.5_ep01
crw-rw-r-- 1 root dialout 254, 15 2007-07-01 13:11 usbdev1.5_ep02
crw-rw-r-- 1 root dialout 254, 12 2007-07-01 13:11 usbdev1.5_ep81
crw-rw-r-- 1 root dialout 254, 14 2007-07-01 13:11 usbdev1.5_ep82

the group is dialout for which I am a member. I don't see a reference
to ttyUSB(n).

I tried to install files using jpilot with no luck. I also tried to
install files using
$ sudo pilot-xfer -i -p usb: junk.txt
Each time the palm connects to the usb and I get the little beep
sounds but the transfer doesn't go through and I end up with
 ****Error unable to open file junk.txt

Now I guess I'll print out a few pages of the pdf and take them to the laundry

I would appreciate suggestions. Out of desperation I tried using
WinXP. I am only familiar with the Win 2000 and under family. Win XP
literally drives me crazy. I could not get it to connect to the
device because I had the wrong user name. I had to log off fast to
preserve sanity.
