Ubuntu weird characters in PuTTY

I thought I had replied to this, but I haven't seen my reply show up.  Sorry
if this is duplicated but ...

I am using a monospaced font.  The width issue is due to the fact that some
8-bit characters are echoed on screen as 2 or 3 character combinations.
