I'd avoid trying it until you have removed every bit of contaminant.  To 
do this, you can try distilled water soaks (maybe some agitation to 
speed things up). 

Then let it dry overnight or better put it in a toaster oven at 150 f 
for an hour or so. 

The let it cool, add some whipped cream, and give it a go.
