compiling kmod-nvidia kernel module

 I get the following error message when compiling the module,
the module is still built.

        KBUILD_EXTMOD="/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/nvidia-96xx-kmod-1.0.9639/nvidiapkg-x64/usr/src/nv"
-f
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/kernel-2.6.22/linux-2.6.22.x86_64/Makefile
modules
test -e include/linux/autoconf.h -a -e
include/config/auto.conf || ( \
        echo; \
        echo " ERROR: Kernel configuration is invalid."; \
        echo "         include/linux/autoconf.h or
include/config/auto.conf are missing."; \
        echo " Run 'make oldconfig && make prepare' on
kernel src to fix it."; \
        echo;

I am compiling against the kernel source of my custom kernel
and i did do a 'make oldconfig' and 'make xconfig'. There is
no 'make prepare' target if you review the 'make help' list.

The file auto.conf does exist but the path is not where the
nvidia makefile is looking. I would just copy auto.conf to
the place where it is looking for it but because the search
paths are truncated I'm not sure where that is.
