cheap RAM! (but can I use it?)

I just got email from TigerDirect advertising a special deal: 1 GB of
PC5400 DDR2 667MHz memory (brand name: PNY) for $9.97 after rebate.

The desktop machine that I purchased following youse all's sage advice
(more on this later) has 1 GB of DDR2 SDRAM, in two DIMMs.

I have some dim recollection that you can't mix DIMMs of different sizes
on the same motherboard, so if I want to upgrade the desktop to 2 GB, I
either need to get two 512-MB DIMMs, or I need to throw out my existing
memory and get two 1-GB DIMMs. Is this true?

PS: For the stuff I'm doing on this machine I don't think I really need
more than 1 GB, so it's not worth buying one item at the rebated price
and another at the full price.

PPS: I see that TigerDirect is also selling pairs of 512-MB DIMMs for
around $50. I'm really glad I didn't pay Dell $100 for upgrading my box
to 2 GB at the factory....
