Favorite way to ban an IP from your webserver?

After poking through my logs today I notice what appears to be an
automated scan. Asking for all sorts of stuff that doesn't exist on my
system. I also see another fellow entering values in on of my forms.
About 8 times a second. So I'm wondering what is the most simple to
understand yet effective way to ban those I suspect of douchebagery.
Firewall drop all? Mod_rewrite? It's not a serious website. Just a
toy. Thanks for any tips.
