It seems that you are not running a production-critical, 
money-making service. I don't think you'd have any problems 
declaring 400-500 your maintenance window and shutting down 
the database, running mysqldump, gzipping the output and 
rsyncing it to two or three places. 

Sometimes the simple solutions are best.
