ide drive limit

does anyone know if there is a limit on the number of ide drives you can
have in one system? i'm not concerned with performance, the server is being
used for backup. standard pc hardware, amd athlon 4200+, multiple ide
controllers. the ide controllers have been working for quite a while, until
the drive count went over 8.

i'm running fedora 8. when there are 8 drives it runs fine. any more than
that and lvm starts failing. fdisk also fails with 9 drives.
i saw this behavior with fedora 6, which prompted a rebuild with f8.
