How many days of backups GnuCash keeps is a user tweakable preference. 
The default is (IIRC) 30 days, but you can turn it down as low as 1 
day.   Note that keeping backups and logs is a GOOD thing.  It's 
saved many a person from accidental data loss (including myself).
