It's because what we now call Boston used to be a number of different 
cities.  And it's sort of an accident that Allston and Brighton got 
swallowed up and Brookline didn't.  So when all the different 
Washington Streets were named, it made perfect sense for all of those 
towns to want a street named to honor George Washington.
