Re: Firewire Depot and eRAID 5? (fwd)

I bought a NORCO DS-1220 box myself. I haven't had the time to
set it up yet, but it got good reviews at newegg. The unit has
12 hot-swappable SATA drive trays and comes with an eSATA card
for the server you hook it up to.

Without any disks installed, it costs $759.99. Add to that a few
server-class 1TB drives such as Seagate ST31000340NS at $289.99:

    DS1220 + 4 drives : 760 + 290x4 => 1920
    DS1220 + 8 drives : 760 + 290x8 => 3080
    DS1220 + 12 drives : 760 + 290x12 => 4240

If you cheap out and get consumer-class 1TB drives such as the Seagate
ST31000340AS at $199.99:

    DS1220 + 4 drives : 760 + 200x4 => 1560
    DS1220 + 8 drives : 760 + 200x8 => 2360
    DS1220 + 12 drives : 760 + 200x12 => 3160

Configured as RAID5, you could have 11 TB of storage for $3,160 with
consumer-class drives or $4,240 with server-class drives.
